Total time

The longest of the four trails. It links several levadas and mountain areas in a single day, with wide, open views along the whole route. Along the way, we cross the longest tunnel in Madeira, about 2.3 km long, one of the most memorable moments of this trail.

It covers 27.62 km with 906 metres of cumulative elevation gain, over 8 to 9 hours of actual walking. The scenery changes constantly between open stretches, damp green areas and moments when the mountain asserts itself with all its force. It demands good fitness and previous experience of long hikes.

With transport included from central Funchal, the full day takes 10 to 11 hours. We leave early and return in the late afternoon, with stops along the route to rest and take in the landscape.
