This hike starts with a descent along a footpath with a few ropes, which gives it an adventurous, more technical start right away. It then joins one of the most beautiful and lush levadas in Madeira, on a stretch full of dense vegetation, humidity and green all around, with the feeling of walking through one of the most impressive corners of the island.
Along the route, the landscape alternates between the wilder part of the footpath, the calm and exuberant atmosphere of the levada, and the final climb along another footpath, which closes the circuit. It is a very varied hike, at a strong pace, with a good physical challenge and magnificent views from start to finish.
It covers 16.77 km with 734 metres of elevation gain, over 6 to 7 hours of actual walking. A demanding but rewarding trail, suited to those who enjoy routes with adventure, high-impact scenery and a true taste of the greenest, most authentic side of Madeira. With transport from central Funchal, the full day takes 8 to 9 hours.
