A long, very varied hike that crosses three levadas in the north of the island, with more than ten tunnels along the route. The trail alternates between stretches carved into the rock, sheer walls, damp forest and open views over deep valleys and mountains.
The route starts in a mountain area and follows the water for much of the way, tracing the levadas that cut across the hillside and link different areas of northern Madeira. The tunnels add a touch of adventure, with constant changes in light, temperature and sound.
It covers 23.12 km with 1,004 metres of cumulative elevation gain, over 6 to 7 hours of actual walking, the greatest elevation gain of the four trails. With transport included from central Funchal, the full day takes 8 to 9 hours.
